RCEM first published exam pass-rate data for 2023, so there are no earlier official figures to compare with.
How the Pass Marks Are Set
- FRCEM SBA: the Angoff method plus one standard error of measurement. The paper is machine-marked with no negative marking.
- FRCEM OSCE: the borderline regression method plus one standard error of measurement — and you must also pass at least one of the three resuscitation stations.
Because the pass mark is set for each sitting, the proportion who pass can move from diet to diet without the standard changing. More on the OSCE in our FRCEM OSCE guide.
Figures by Candidate Group Are Not FRCEM-Specific
RCEM also reports pass rates by training status, primary medical qualification, first language and attempt — but for all its exams combined, MRCEM included. In 2024, for example, UK trainees passed 79.6% of their exams and international candidates 46.0%. Those figures describe RCEM's exams as a whole; they are not FRCEM pass rates, and quoting them as such overstates what RCEM has published.
